FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Does the Octagon Cycling Club have different level of riders?
All No-Drop rides are open to riders of all levels. The group may split up on climbs but faster riders will wait and you’ll regroup at the top. On a Sunday we will typically have an A and B group. The A group pace requirement is listed and both the A and B group ride the same route.
How fast do I have to be?
You will need a reasonable level of fitness to ride but do not need to be a super fit rider. On days we have groups the A Group averages a 16-20mph pace and will not wait for riders. The B group averages a 13-16mph pace and will wait for all riders. Anyone who joins the A group and then finds out they cannot keep up will have to wait for the B group to continue on.
Will I be dropped if I’m too slow?
No, not on No-Drop rides. The pace of the group is dictated by the slowest rider. When you first head out with a club, ride with their slowest group. If you find it too easy, you can move up over the following weeks until you find your right level. It’s better to underestimate your ability than to really struggle and be put off.
What else should I bring?
We recommend that people bring a couple of spare inner tubes, tire levers, a pump and a multi-tool. You’ll need some money for our stop or, if a stop isn’t planned, enough food and drink to fuel your ride. Make sure you have a fully charged mobile phone. Finally, dress appropriately for the weather and remember that over the course of a ride it may change.
