FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does the Octagon Cycling Club have different level of riders?
All No-Drop rides are open to riders of all levels. The group may split up on climbs but faster riders will wait and you’ll regroup at the top.
On a Sunday we will typically have 2 rides.
Ride 1 will have an A and B group, both groups ride the same route. The A group will be a drop group and will not wait for riders. The B group will be a no-drop ride with a sweeper.
Ride 2 will only have one group and will be a no-drop ride with a sweeper.

How fast do I have to be?
You will need a reasonable level of fitness to ride but do not need to be a super fit rider. A Group averages a 14-16 mph pace and the B group averages a 12-14 mph pace. The routes are available to members or posted on Facebook which details the miles and elevation. Both routes will wait for all riders however we recommend riders check the elevation and the mileage before joining a ride.
Will I be dropped if I’m too slow?
No, not on No-Drop rides. The pace of the group is dictated by the slowest rider. When you first head out with a club, ride with their slowest group. If you find it too easy, you can move up over the following weeks until you find your right level. It’s better to underestimate your ability than to really struggle and be put off.
What else should I bring?
We recommend that people bring a helmet, water bottles, snacks, a spare inner tube, tire levers, a portable pump, and a multi-tool. You’ll need some money for our stop (if one is scheduled) or enough food and drink to fuel your ride. Make sure you have a fully charged mobile phone. Finally, dress appropriately for the weather and remember that over the course of a ride it may change.
